FINDING YOUR BUS AFTER SCHOOL AT BEDFORD JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL AND BEDFORD HIGH SCHOOL

TRANSPORTATION DEPARTMENT INFORMATION

Over 2,500 students are provided with bus transportation to and from school each day by Bedford buses. It is a privilege. Our most important consideration is the safety of the passengers we carry - students. Under normal conditions, elementary and kindergarten students can be expected to walk up to one-half mile to a bus stop. Our Secondary students can walk up to one mile.

While the Board of Education furnishes transportation, it does not relieve parents from the responsibility of supervision at the bus stop. Once a student boards the bus - and at that time only-does he or she become the responsibility of the school district. Such responsibility shall end when the student leaves the bus at the close of the school day.

Bedford Public Schools provides transportation for students attending their neighborhood/assigned school. (Refer to the Bedford Public School District Map to see which elementary school is assigned to your address. Please call the Transportation Department if you need further assistance at 734-850-6070.) Parents who opt to send their children to a different elementary school "outside their neighborhood/assigned school" must provide their own transportation.

Please refer to the Traversa Ride 360 website or mobile app for details about the stop your child(ren) will need to be at for the first day of school. Please have your child(ren) at their designated stop 10 minutes prior to pick-up time. We encourage you to walk to the stop with your child for the first day or two.

We ask for your patience as we make any necessary adjustments during the first week or two of school. It is our goal to provide your children with safe and timely transportation to and from our schools each day.

SERVICE FOR JUNIOR HIGH AND HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS:

Buses start picking up the students between 6:30 AM and 6:45 AM with schools beginning at 7:30 AM. After school, students should look for their route by locating the corresponding slot number which is painted on the ground of the Jackman Road parking lot. The blocker buses are at the north and south ends of the parking lot, blocking the entrance to the parking lot. If dropping off your junior high or high school student, please enter the drop off loop using the far north driveway off of Jackman Road between the junior high and the Bedford Public Library. After dropping off your student, you will exit using the same drive. Students should not be dropped off in front of the schools or in the Jackman Road parking lot.

SERVICE FOR ALL ELEMENTARY SCHOOL STUDENTS:

Buses start running at approximately 7:30 AM, with schools beginning at 8:30 AM.

Parents / Guardians of Kindergarten / Young 5s students will receive a tag in the mail before school starts informing them of pick-up and take home information. Young 5's - Elementary - AM pick-up and PM drop-off will be at existing stops with K through 5th graders. A colored tag and a letter from the principal of your school will be mailed to all Young 5's students who will be riding our buses.

CODE OF CONDUCT

School bus transportation is a privilege available to all Bedford students. To ensure each student's safety, normal school regulations for code of conduct will extend to each student from the time he or she enters the bus until such time as the student exits the bus. While the Board of Education furnishes transportation, parents are responsible for the safety and supervision of children at the bus stop.

Students who become serious disciplinary problems on the school bus may have their riding privileges suspended. In situations where discipline is required, the Director of Transportation and the building administrator will be informed of the student's misbehavior. The student's parents will be notified via a "misconduct report" and their cooperation will be requested to correct their child's behavior. In instances when students do not conduct themselves in the proper manner, depending on the infraction, bus riding privileges may be suspended.

Please read the bus rules below. Parents are asked to review these regulations with their child(ren) to make certain they are understood clearly. The most important consideration of the District and parents alike must be the safety of their children.

- Students must be at the designated bus stop 10 minutes prior to the arrival of the bus.
- Students must stand 15 - 30 feet from the point where they board the bus.
- Students must enter the bus in single file.
- Students must be seated immediately and remain seated until the bus arrives at its destination.
- Students must sit on the seat, facing the front of the bus, with their hands inside the window and their feet on the floor. Student's feet and legs should not be inside the aisle.
- Students must speak at normal levels, use proper language, and not instigate others.
- Students must become silent when crossing railroad tracks or at any time the driver ask for "quiet".
- Students may not bring glass objects on the bus.
- Students may not bring animals on the bus.
- Students may not use cell phones on the bus.
- Students may not eat, drink, or chew gum on the bus.
- Students may not light matches or lighters on the bus. Smoking is prohibited.
- Students are requested to help keep the bus clean, sanitary, and in good condition.
- The emergency door and equipment shall be used only in an emergency.

Pursuant to Section 2913 of the Michigan Revised Judicature Act, the School District may recover damages against the parent(s)/guardian of minor in an amount not to exceed $2,500 for any willful or malicious damage caused by the student. These damages include, but are not limited to, cutting or defacing cushions, breaking windows, or any damage of a similar nature.

Bus rules are posted on each bus and available from the driver. Questions pertaining to school transportation should be directed to the Director of Transportation (850-6070).
