Update from the Superintendent, Dr. Carl Shultz

August 31, 2022

Dear Bedford Public Schools Parents/Guardians,

The district has been hard at work throughout the summer completing renovations to welcome our students and staff back for another exciting school year in even safer and more comfortable learning environments at all grade levels. A major initiative the district has undertaken this summer is the installation of new camera systems for our buses. Interior cameras can assist with resolving disciplinary issues and new “Stop Arm” cameras can document traffic violations and assist with enforcement. Student safety at bus stops is at risk when drivers ignore the red flashing lights and extended Stop signs on our buses and illegally pass. There is no road configuration within Bedford Township that is exempt from the law requiring motorists to stop, regardless of direction of travel. District leadership will be collaborating with the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office and the Monroe County Prosecutor to identify and prosecute violators to the full extent of the law. Please read this Open Letter to the Bedford Public School Community (https://drive.google.com/file/d/1nlABL3c8If7pvkbbl955hR1XU4lIWz9D/view) from Michael G. Roehrig, Monroe County Prosecutor and Troy Goodnough, Monroe County Sheriff for more information about enforcement of this law.

Additional summer’s major projects include:

• Purchased 4 new buses

• Replaced Bedford Junior High School Elevator

• New ceiling tiles and paint in the original section of the high school’s hallways

• New paint and updates to the DRE Gymnasium

• Parking lot work and sealcoating at MRE

• New playground equipment installed at JRE

• New field turf surface and lighting system at Bedford Community Stadium

• New Fiberoptic Cable between BHS and MRE (completion expected this fall)

We are excited about the stadium improvements and welcoming the soccer and lacrosse teams into the stadium for their games as well. We look forward to sharing more details and architectural renderings for Phase 2 of stadium projects and announcing improvements to another BPS facility in the near future. All of these improvements are made possible because of local partners and donors offering their support.

Our Back-to-School issue of our News & Views Community Update Newsletter (https://drive.google.com/file/d/1Z7nrpEkwY3bl3T2IC3DSiNaaGk_fEmSS/view) was mailed to each home in Bedford. It is full of many things we are proud of here at Bedford and yet it is only the tip of the iceberg! Academic achievement at all levels culminates with Bedford High School named as the top high school located in Monroe County for the second straight year by U.S. News & World Report Best High School Rankings. Athletic programs saw two state champions and numerous new school records last year. Students in extracurricular activities advanced to the national and International competition levels, including a pair of junior high students bringing home top honors at the HOSA International Leadership Conference. Our students, staff and coaches take great pride in all they do and it shows!

The district leadership team and I will continue to push out important updates and events throughout the school year. Please make sure you are connected to your child's Schoology Account and that your contact information is current in Infinite Campus. Emergency announcements are sent out using the information and contact preferences entered in Infinite Campus. Parents can manage their contact information in the Parent Portal of Infinite Campus and you can opt in to receive text message notifications from Infinite Campus, if desired, to receive cancellation and delay notifications. (For extended family members/child care providers whose contact information is not kept on file with the district, we recommend using the mobile app for those notifications.)

The Updated BPS COVID Protocols and Guidance document (https://drive.google.com/file/d/1w85b0bVAM4WnxYM9wJ2QYuE_8FG3YOrV/view) has been posted on the district website and takes into account new federal and state recommendations as well as knowledge gained throughout the pandemic by our district leaders. This new phase of the COVID-19 pandemic relies heavily on individuals making smart and safe decisions so that we can all continue to enjoy a successful school year. We will continue to monitor the wellbeing of our students and staff members as we proceed through the COVID-19 Pandemic. I want to reassure our families that as any updates become available we will share information as quickly and responsibly as possible.

Once again, thank you for all of your support and we are looking forward to another incredible year here in Bedford.

Thank You and Welcome Back Mules!

Respectfully,

Carl Shultz, Ph.D
