Smith Road Elementary School Annual Education Report

Dear Parents and Community Members:

We are pleased to present you with the Annual Education Report (AER) which provides key information on the 2009-2010 educational progress for Smith Road Elementary.   The AER addresses the complex reporting information required by federal and state laws. The school’s report contains information about student assessment, Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) and teacher quality.  If you have any questions about the AER, please contact the school for assistance.

For 2009-2010, Smith road Elementary made Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) in English language arts and mathematics. While we are pleased to have reached this important goal, we are continuously working to improve. We appreciate the continued support of parents, staff and our community in this effort.
State law requires that we also report the following additional information.

PROCESS FOR ASSIGNING PUPILS TO THE SCHOOL

There are five elementary schools within the Bedford Public School district. Students are assigned according to geographic location. Consideration is given to transfer requests within the district based on childcare needs and school preference. Students seeking Schools-of-Choice within Monroe County may enroll according to the guidelines. Young Fives and specific special education programs are housed in various elementary buildings throughout the district.

THE STATUS OF THE 3-5 YEAR SCHOOL IMMPROVEMENT PLAN

The 2009-2010 school year saw numerous school improvement measures within the Bedford Public Schools District. The district created new district wide goals and the district was also visited by Advanced Ed formerly known as North Central Accreditation (NCA.) Bedford Public Schools accomplished the major fest of receiving district wide accreditation in all seven global standards. The 2010-2011 school year will represent the first year of a five year district wide school improvement cycle. The five year cycle will include efforts to address recommendations from the Quality Assurance Team visit and the new district wide goals.

District Goals:

  1. All students will improve their ability to infer in reading as measured by the MEAP and MME.
  2. All students will improve their ability to solve problems in the numbers and operations strand.
  3. All students will be able to effectively communicate their ideas in writing in a variety of genre.
  4. All students will demonstrate responsible behavior in the school environment.

A BRIEF DISCRIPTION OF EACH SPECIALIZED SCHOOL

There are no specialized schools at the elementary level.

Our curriculum is aligned and implemented according to the Michigan Curriculum Framework.

THE AGGREGATE STUDENT ACHEIVEMENT RESULTS FOR ANY LOCAL COMPENTENCY TESTS OR NATIONALLY NORMED ACHIEVEMENT TESTS

Smith Road Elementary uses a variety of ways to measure and report on student progress and achievement. Developmental progress is recorded through samples of student work, teacher observations, Michigan Literacy Progress Profile (MLPP), District Common Math Assessments and the MEAP Assessment. Detailed MEAP information is provided through the link in paragraph one. Local competency information is available through the building reading specialist.

IDENTIFY THE NUMBER AND PERCENT OF STUDENTS REPRESENTED BY PARENTS AT PARENT-TEACHER CONFERENCES

We are proud of the ongoing participation and support of our parents. Parent teacher conferences and/or parent information nights were attended by 98% of our parents.

The 2009-2010 school year was a tremendous year for the Smith Road students and staff.  We are extremely proud of our accomplishments and we are looking forward to additional growth in student accomplishments in the 2010-2011 school year.
