Alternative education is a generic label applied to a variety of educational programs. Open Door Alternative simply means an alternative to the traditional school settings. Alternative's biggest points of departure from traditional schools is in the area of Teacher/Student ratio and interaction , instruction, curriculum and the student's increased responsibility for initiating their work.

Open Door is a program of choice. It was established in 1987 as a non-traditional program based on the premise that there legitimate differences in people and in the way they learn. The program's primary purpose is to help students who have experienced failure or very little success in their former educational experience.

Open Door is an educational program designed for 16 to 19 year old students working towards a regular Bedford High School diploma.
