It's the People!
Welcome to our District - to the community and school system that make Bedford Township such a wonderful place to live, work, and play. The reason is simple; it's the people. Our schools are so extraordinary because of the highly-qualified educators who teach nearly 5,000 students, all those who serve in each building, those who receive their education at BPS, and those individuals who support our schools so dilligently. We say: Great Students + Great Staff + Great Community = Excellent Schools! |

Michigan Merit Curriculum and
Common Core Curriculum...PLUS
Bedford Public Schools follow both the Michigan Merit Curriculum and the Common Core Curriculum. The educational experience at Bedford expands far beyond those curriculum requirements.

The Elementary Experience Includes:
Art Instruction with Art Teachers, Music Taught by Music Teachers, Physical Education Classes, Media Center, Technology Enhanced Education, Enrichment Opportunities, Student Support, Community Education Programs, and Latchkey Available.
Starting with the youngest in our unique half-day Young 5's program and our full-day Kindergarten programs, and all the way up to the 5th grade, caring teachers provide individualized instruction, hands-on activities, and innovative learning environments often using multiple forms of technology to keep the students engaged and learning.
Students receive classroom lessons in the core curriculum areas as well as visiting the classrooms of the art and music teachers for creative and expressive learning in the arts. Physical education is a highlight for many as the class travels down to the gym to participate in innovative and entertaining exercise activities and games. Regular visits to the Media Center ensures each child has engaging reading material matched to their reading level.
Support services are available in a variety of areas to ensure each student has the tools for reaching their full potential; Health Aides, Response to Intervention (RTI), Literacy Support, Speech & Language Instruction, Resource Room Instruction, Psychologist, Social Worker, Student Support, and Occupational Therapy.
Latchkey child care is available to those families whose schedules extend beyond the hours of the school day. Registration is required. |
The Junior High Journey
Here the students transition into a more independent learning environment in which students are able to learn to their full potential intellectually, emotionally, socially, physically, and for life-long learning. The students continue to have opportunities to explore the creative arts and enjoy the use of technology in their instruction. More academic and elective choices are offered, some of which count as high school credit:
Art, Music, Drama, Band, Orchestra, Choir, Technical Education, Technology Education, Spanish and Algebra Classes for High School Credit
Students have the option to participate in organizations such as: Band, Orchestra, National Junior Honor Society and Student Council. For the 7th & 8th Graders: Choir, Newspaper, and Yearbook are also offered. Bedford Junior High clubs include: Art, Chess, Computers, Drama, Juggling, Math, Robotics, Science Olympiad, Strategic Thinking Board Games, Quiz Bowl, Writing, and YMCA Leaders. |
| SIXTH GRADE................................................................................................................. |
The sixth grade school-within-a-school model keeps these new students to the junior high students with a small team of teachers and the same classmates throughout the day in a self-contained area on the second floor of the building. It serves as an excellent transition from the elementary environment where the students enjoy their budding independence in the junior high but still have the smaller school atmosphere to flourish in as they adapt to the change.
Community Education continues to offer recreational sports programs for sixth grade students. |
| SEVENTH & EIGHTH GRADES..................................................................................... |
For the seventh and eighth grade years, each student is assigned a home base teacher who will get to know your child personally. The students will switch teachers for each class based on the bell schedule.
Eligible eighth grade students can elect to take Algebra instead of general math and American Cultures courses in English and American History.
Seventh and eighth graders are eligible to participate in both intramural sporting activities and interscholastic sports teams such as Basketball, Cheerleading, Cross Country, Football, Grapplerettes, Softball, Track, Volleyball, and Wrestling.
Eighth hour is an after school study hour three days a week where teachers are available to help with homework.
Guidance Counselors are available to assist students. |
Senior High Success
It's also the Community!
Conveniently located less than five miles from Toledo, Bedford Township offers plenty to do for both the young and the young-at-heart. Organized in the 1830's, Bedford now offers a great variety of amenities including, an award-winning school district, a state-of-the-art library, a fully-equipped YMCA with outstanding programming, and a large parks and recreation program. Its Town Hall, with a sheriff's substation, stands in the heart of the township. Whether you enjoy fishing, swimming, basketball, or golf, you will find it all right here in Bedford Township along with friendly, quiet neighborhoods and beautiful tree-lined streets.
With more than 30,000 people, Bedford Township is a vibrant community that offers the perfect blend of activity and solace. Local businesses thrive in Bedford because they are in a community which supports their success.
And many of those people are actively involved in the schools on a daily basis. Whether they are a parent-volunteer in an elementary classroom or a dedicated officer in a parent / teacher organization, or a booster club, we are greatly appreciative of all of their time, talent, and in many cases, their financial contributions. Thank you for all you do.
