BPS Technology Mission Statement

Bedford Public Schools utilizes technology to provide opportunities for Bedford students and staff to explore, gather, evaluate, manage, create, and communicate information in an ethical manner as we strive to meet the challenges of a global society.

Our Accomplishments

In 1997, voters approved the first Monroe County Technology Enhancement Millage which helped to launch Bedford Public Schools into a new digital era. It provided the initial infrastructure and hardware to fully connect all of our facilities to the Internet. Our local and wide area network were created, email capability was extended to staff, and student computer labs were established in all of our schools.

Voters approved our efforts to continue integrating technology into our schools with the successful renewal of the tech millage in 2001, and again, in 2006. Over the last decade, millions of technology dollars have been invested in our school district to begin to prepare our students for a future that is decidedly different from our collective industrial past.

Our District maintains over 1,800 computers for use by our 5,700 users. Recent initiatives paid for by the technology millage include:

Installation of new monochrome laser printers in classrooms for faster, more cost-effective printing.

The replacement of aging hardware to continue providing reliable, up-to-date technology to all users.

Implementation of the Home Access Center, allowing parents and students to access grades, attendance, and assignments, online 24/7.

Implementation of updated safety and security measures; Internet filtering, antivirus software, and email spam filter.

Our Future Plans

Installation of LCD projectors in all classrooms to enable easy viewing from anywhere in the room. Projectors are also prerequisites for future installations of document cameras, smartboards, etc...
Implementation of Learning Management System, Moodle 2.0, providing students with remote 24/7 accessibility to class online activities, courseware, digital file dropbox, and more.

Study of 1-to-1 initiative at the secondary level to look at providing a device to each student.

Implementation of students email to help facilitate communication between students and teachers.

Begin implementation of wireless network infrastructure to maintain reliable high-speed access to network resources.

Continue professional development for staff to provide innovative teaching techniques and support in using technology.

How are Bedford Students using Technology?
Students use mobile, wireless, rolling labs giving expanded access across the school building for anytime anywhere learning.
Students use Skype to connect to and learn from others around the country and across the world including places like Columbia, Germany, England, and Australia.

Students create multimedia projects based on curricular concepts using Web 2.0 tools like Voicethread, Glogster, Jaycut, Voki, and Animoto.

Students use Smartboards to participate in interactive learning activities, virtual dissections, simulations, and collaborative games.

Students conduct research using high quality online subscription resources, like Gale Group and Nettrekker, for access to hundreds of professional journals, periodicals, and newspapers.

Students use video conferencing to participate in distance learning opportunities and virtual field trips to historical locations and museums, to connect with authors, and interview experts in the field.

Students and teachers use blogs to extend learning and connect with students outside of school to gather student feedback, generate questions, and facilitate discussions.

Students and teachers use wikis to create collaborative spaces for students to create content and share work and ideas inside and outside of
school.
