Once the kindergarten registration process is successfully completed, each of the newest members of the Bedford family gets a free t-shirt proudly proclaiming them a Kindergartner! An added bonus, completed registrations qualify the family for entry into a drawing for an iPad Mini. Kindergarten registrations must be successfully completed by April 7, 2017 to enter.

  • Great Start Readiness Program Getting Ready for Next Year

The Great Start Readiness Program (GSRP) is a FREE preschool that prepares children for kindergarten. This 5-star winning program explores pre-reading, math and science skills, language, music, movement, problem-solving and social skills. GSRP is funded by a Michigan Department of Education grant. It is located in the former Smith Road Elementary School building and offers a four day a week all day program, and a four day a week ½ day program. Eligible students must live in Monroe County and be age 4 by September 1st as well as meeting other eligibility factors.

    No School for Kindergarten Students Only on Friday, April 7th

    Bedford Public Schools will be having spring conferences for kindergarten students. Conferences will be held on Friday, April 7th. Your child's Kindergarten teacher will be contacting you with a sign-up sheet. Kindergarten students will not attend school on Friday, April 7th. It is a regular day of learning for Young Fives and students in first-fifth grades.

  • Alumni Association Announces 1st Annual Kicking Mule 10K

    SATURDAY, APRIL 1, 2017

    Bedford Alumni is excited to announce the 1st Annual Kickin' Mule 10k which will be held on Saturday, April 1 at Bedford High School. Runners of all ages and experience are invited to attend this event which will benefit Bedford Alumni's fund to raise money for permanent restrooms to be built inside the Bedford Community Stadium.

    The race begins at 9:00am.
    Entry fee is $25 and includes a t-shirt.

    There will also be a 1- mile walk inside Bedford Community Stadium which begins at 9:05am. 1-mile walk registration is $10.

    The deadline for registration is March 30, 2017 at 11:59pm. For more information about the race, or to sign up to participate, runners should visit

    Alumni Announce Jonathan Scout Hall of Fame Scholarship

    Jonathan Scout was the textbook definition of all the things a Bedford Kicking Mule should be. He was a kind and friendly young man who treated others with dignity and respect. He was engaged with his community as an Eagle Scout, with his school as a Varsity Football player. Early in 2016, Jonathan was diagnosed with cancer. Our community watched with pride as Jonathan battled his illness. The community cheered with Jonathan when he scored a touchdown against Dexter this past football season. As his illness progressed, Jonathan was granted a wish by the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Jonathan used his wish for a new scoreboard to be installed in Bedford Community Stadium. This generosity and selflessness are a true testament to Jonathan and to his family. Bedford Alumni wanted to find a way to honor Jonathan's courage, grace, and generosity and to make sure that our community never forgets this exemplary young man or the way he lived his life. Our hope is that the community never forgets the tangible and intangible gifts Jonathan left behind.

    To honor Jonathan, the Bedford Alumni Association has established the "Jonathan Scout Hall of Fame Scholarship", which will be awarded to a graduating Senior from Bedford High School every year. While the student who wins this award is not being inducted into the Bedford High School Hall of Fame, the Hall of Fame wishes to recognize Jonathan and his contributions to our alma mater as the sponsor of this scholarship which we hope will become the highest honor of citizenship and school spirit that a Bedford student can win.

    Students may be nominated by teachers, coaches, mentors, administrators, or peers. They must be planning to attend a 2 or 4 year college or university, a technical or trade program, or an apprenticeship. To qualify, nominees must have demonstrated the qualities of strength, courage, perseverance, or generosity. They must have participated in a sport or in another extracurricular activity and must have demonstrated excellent citizenship as a student at Bedford High School.

Water Quality Sampling at Bedford Public Schools

Bedford Public Schools is undertaking a voluntary and proactive survey to ensure a safe drinking water supply in our district facilities for our students, staff, volunteers and guests. We are taking water samples to check for lead in our drinking water. While we are under no legal requirements to undergo any type of testing for this, in the aftermath of the Flint water crisis, we felt it would offer some comfort and peace of mind to assess our facilities and to address any areas of concern that might be revealed as a result of this testing process.

Sampling is being done by the Buildings and Grounds Department employees and will be paid for from the Buildings and Grounds Department budget for Maintenance and Operations. Bedford Public Schools will also be participating in the School Drinking Water Quality Reimbursement Program. This is a joint program between the Michigan Department of Education and the Department of Environmental quality designed to provide school funding for costs associated with the mitigation of potential lead exposure from drinking water. Up to $950 is available per school building on a reimbursement basis for the cost of testing for lead in drinking water, fixture replacement, filter purchases, plumbing assessments, or technical assistance incurred between July 1, 2016 and September 30, 2017.


Each of our school buildings had samples returned with no detection of lead in them so we know that our water is arriving from our source (South County Water System) with no issues. Once the water is delivered to our buildings, lead can be picked up through contact with a lead based solder or from fixtures constructed from materials containing lead as the water sits in the piping or fixtures. This is less of an issue for newer construction since Congress passed a law in 1986 banning the use of lead solder containing great than 0.2% lead and restricted the lead content of facuets, pipes, and other plumbing materials to 8.0%.

Representative sampling

Samples were taken in each of our buildings using a representational method. For example, if a building has 12 drinking fountains of 3 different models, one of each of the models would be tested. A high result in one particular model would indicate that we would need to look at all of the other similar fixtures. If one came back high, corrective action would be taken, through repair or replacement, and then resampled to ensure that action was effective in lowering lead content to acceptable levels. If effective, that action could then be expanded to all similar models.

End of line samples
Sample locations at the end of plumbing lines would ensure that the entire length of the plumbing lines could be accounted for in the sampling and rule out any issues between where the water enters our facility and that very last room at the end of the hall.

First Draw vs. Flush samples
Initial samples are taken with a first draw sample. The water sits undisturbed for a period of at least 6 hours and is taken from a cold water source. A high result from this sample could be followed up with a flush sample. This is done after the water runs through the fixture for a period of time and helps pinpoint if the elevated levels came from contact with the fixture components, or as that water was flushed out of the fixture, if it came from contact with the plumbing lines prior to reaching the fixture.

Samples were analyzed by National Testing Laboratories, LTD of Ypsilanti, MI.

The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has established an action level for 15 parts per billion (ppb) for Public Water Systems. In our case, this is the number that South County Water is legally required to comply with and our water supply from them is not supposed to exceed that number. We have no concerns with lead content in our water supply from South County Water. The EPA's recommended action level for lead in drinking water, the water that comes out of our faucets at the point of consumption, is 20 parts per billion (ppb).

These EPA levels for lead are not a health standard. For this reason, the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ) is recommending that schools take action to lower the lead in their drinking water if the test results are over 5 ppb, which is the bottled water standard. This is a recommendation and not a legal requirement at this point. Bedford Public School has made the decision to voluntarily, and proactively, test and implement lead reduction actions, where necessary, with the goal of having direct consumption sources of water that are used for drinking and cooking to be no higher than the 5 ppb level.

In conversations with the people at each of these agencies, they commented about how great it was that our district was doing this and that we should be commended for our efforts since this is not something school districts are required to do.

Spring 2016 Assessment Results Released

In the second year of the M-STEP online assessments at Bedford, we have exceeded the state averages in 15 of the 16 categories...we were just shy of the state average in 5th grade math.

Last Spring, the juniors took the SAT for the first time. (Previously, the juniors took the ACT test.) Our juniors averaged 1010.4 while the rest of the state was at 1001.

As with any summative standardized test, this is one snapshot of how our students perform. We use data generated by these tests, in conjunction with other student assessment data gathered throughout the year, to look for ways to improve. Bedford's Balanced Assessment Team and school improvement efforts continuously focus on ways to improve the education for each of our students.
