Bedford Public Schools Exceeds Average
State Performance in M-STEP Results
M-Step LogoIn the Spring of 2015, students took part in a new assessment testing program called the Michigan Student Test of Educational Progress, or more commonly called the M-STEP. This test has replaced the MEAP testing students had previously taken. The M-STEP is a very different test than the MEAP tests administered in past years. For example, M-STEP has fewer multiple choice questions and more questions that require problem solving and critical thinking skills than the previous MEAP assessment. Because this is a different test measuring different standards, M-STEP scores should not be compared to scores on the MEAP test. This year's M-STEP data will provide a baseline to which future year’s data can be compared. In addition to this being the first year for this M-STEP assessment, this is the first time students were given their tests online rather than the pencil and paper format students had used for the MEAP in the past.

How Did Bedford Do?
As a district, Bedford Public Schools exceeded the state average in 19 of the 20 tests our students took. Our 8th grade English and Language Arts portion was 0.1 percentage point shy of the state average.

As with any summative standardized test, this is one snapshot of how our students performed.  We use the data generated by this test, in conjuction with other student assessment data gathered throughout the year, to look for ways to improve. Our Balanced Assessment Team and school impovement efforts continuously focus on ways to improve the education for each of our students.

How Did MY Student Do?
Individual results were sent home with the students on Monday, December 21, 2015 along with the M-STEP Parent Guide. These results will look different than what you have seen in the past with MEAP results. A newly developed video is now available which summarizes M-STEP and walks viewers through how to read and interpret student scores within the M-STEP Parent Report. The video is available with or without Closed Caption. The M-STEP Parent Report Communication videos are available on the MDE M-STEP web page at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AM55xZ-ZuNU

Bedford Public Schools Takes Student Safety Seriously

After a recent threat to schools in LA and NYC made headlines, Bedford Public Schools wishes you to know we take safety seriously in our district.

"Our number one priority at Bedford Public Schools is safety," declared Superintendent Mark Kleinhans. "We have taken a number of steps over the last few years to increase the safety and security of our students and staff."

In additional to the traditional fire and tornado drills, each of Bedford's schools go through lockdown drills. All of our drills are communicated with our local authorities. The staff has been trained in ALICE (Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter, and Evacuate) and has been instructed on how to react to intruders and construct enhanced barricades. Staff training is done on an ongoing basis.

Exterior doors are locked during school hours with entry points monitored and visitor entry granted individually by school personnel. All visitors must present ID and receive a visitor badge.

Safe entries remain high on our priority list for protecting our students and staff.

Additional security devices are installed, or will be installed, on classroom doors to use to prevent an intruder from entering classrooms in a lockdown scenario. Classrooms are being outfitted with additional materials to help students shelter in place for longer periods of time, if necessary.

Bedford Public Schools works closely with our local authorities. We are grateful to have our liaison officer, Dep. Lestock, available on campus. Law enforcement officials have taken part in tactical training for an active shooter in one of our schools.

"We encourage anyone who is aware of any type of threat to let us know. Call us at 734-850-6000. Or use the OK2SAY confidential tip line which accepts tips 24 hours a day, seven days a week. As always, for an immediate emergency, call 911," emphasized Mr. Kleinhans. You can submit a tip to OK2SAY using any of the following ways:

Web: Online Tip Form at: https://ok2say.state.mi.us/
     Call: 8-555-OK2SAY (855-565-2729)
     Text: 652729 (OK2SAY)
     Email: OK2SAY@mi.gov
A Mobile App is available for free on Google Play and iPhone App Store.

In the event of any type of emergency, our first line of communications with our families will be through the Honeywell Instant Alert system. Please make sure the school office is aware of any changes to your contact information or to update your communication preferences such as phone, email, text, or any combination of these.

BPS Staff Accept Accreditation Award!

AdvancED seal

Bedford Public Schools was granted AdvancED School System Accreditation from the AdvancED Accreditation Commission, the national commission that confers this North Central Association Commission on Accreditation and School Improvement (NCA CASI) accreditation seal.

This means that our district, and ALL of our schools are accredited, and that Bedford Public Schools is recognized across the nation as a quality school system. The accreditation process involves three ongoing components: 1) meeting high quality standards; 2) implementing a continuous process of improvement; and 3) engaging in quality assurance through internal and external review. The system’s accreditation is for a five-year term (valid through June 30, 2020) with regular monitoring of progress and reporting occurring during the term.

“School System Accreditation as conferred by the AdvancED Accreditation Commission provides Bedford Public Schools a nationally-recognized mark of quality for our system and all the schools within our system,” shared Mr. Kleinhans. “It demonstrates to our community our commitment to excellence, our openness to external review and feedback, and our desire to be the best we can be on behalf of the students we serve.”

Dr. Mark Elgart, President/CEO of AdvancED, stated, “AdvancED School System Accreditation is a rigorous process that focuses the entire school system on the primary goal of creating lifelong learners. Bedford Public Schools is to be commended for engaging in this process and demonstrating a commitment to continuous improvement.”

BPS Staff accepts AdvancED Award

This whole process was the result of a lot of work on the part of many people in our district. Representing Bedford Public Schools, Superintendent Mark Kleinhans, Assistant Superintendent of Instruction and Student Services Edward Manuszak, and Bedford Public Schools' staff Lora Currie, Dawn Keiser, Jeanne Kearney, Julie Eaton, Scott Earl, Jen Brush, and Irene Chrysochoos accepted the AdvancED School System Accreditation Award from the AdvancED Accreditation Commission.
