Stadium Track Now Complete and Open for Community Use!

New Track Starting LineOur track has been resurfaced and new markings have been painted on! Just in time for for everyone to use to burn off all of those extra holiday calories! Our track is open as a free fitness resource for our community during daylight hours.

Using funds from an Installment Purchase Agreement, private donations, and contributions to an online GoFundMe account, the old track surface at the Bedford Community Stadium was scraped off, base repairs made, a new surface installed, track markings repainted and protective coverings are in use when needed to prolong its lifespan. Payments on the Installment Purchase Agreement will be coming from the General Fund.

Having a new track surface installed means that we will once again have a facility worthy of hosting the SEC Track Championships in 2017!! Track conditions had deteriorated to the point where Superintendent Mark Kleinhans had recommended to the Board of Education that Bedford's track was no longer safe for competition. Bedford's Track team would not have been able to host any meets, much less an SEC Championship.

Our track, in addition to being a competitive sport facility and used for conditioning by many athletes in other sports, is a classroom. It serves as a physical education facility for the 2,700 students in both Bedford Junior High School and Bedford High School. Physical Education is a state mandated curriculum and graduation requirement. Students are evaluated on their fitness/performance as they run the track and this grade is reflected in their GPA.

BPS Staff Accept Accreditation Award!

AdvancED seal

Bedford Public Schools was granted AdvancED School System Accreditation from the AdvancED Accreditation Commission, the national commission that confers this North Central Association Commission on Accreditation and School Improvement (NCA CASI) accreditation seal.

This means that our district, and ALL of our schools are accredited, and that Bedford Public Schools is recognized across the nation as a quality school system. The accreditation process involves three ongoing components: 1) meeting high quality standards; 2) implementing a continuous process of improvement; and 3) engaging in quality assurance through internal and external review. The system’s accreditation is for a five-year term (valid through June 30, 2020) with regular monitoring of progress and reporting occurring during the term.

“School System Accreditation as conferred by the AdvancED Accreditation Commission provides Bedford Public Schools a nationally-recognized mark of quality for our system and all the schools within our system,” shared Mr. Kleinhans. “It demonstrates to our community our commitment to excellence, our openness to external review and feedback, and our desire to be the best we can be on behalf of the students we serve.”

Dr. Mark Elgart, President/CEO of AdvancED, stated, “AdvancED School System Accreditation is a rigorous process that focuses the entire school system on the primary goal of creating lifelong learners. Bedford Public Schools is to be commended for engaging in this process and demonstrating a commitment to continuous improvement.”

BPS Staff accepts AdvancED Award

This whole process was the result of a lot of work on the part of many people in our district. Representing Bedford Public Schools, Superintendent Mark Kleinhans, Assistant Superintendent of Instruction and Student Services Edward Manuszak, and Bedford Public Schools' staff Lora Currie, Dawn Keiser, Jeanne Kearney, Julie Eaton, Scott Earl, Jen Brush, and Irene Chrysochoos accepted the AdvancED School System Accreditation Award from the AdvancED Accreditation Commission.

Chicken Pox Case at High School

An individual who attends Bedford High School has been diagnosed with chickenpox. Chickenpox is a
highly contagious illness that generally starts with a slight fever, followed by a blister-like, itchy rash.
Although this is usually not a serious illness, in some children and certain high-risk individuals, including
those on chemotherapy, are pregnant, or are immune-suppressed, chickenpox can cause a much more
severe illness.

If your child has not already had chickenpox and has not been fully immunized, we recommend that
they receive the vaccine. The vaccine, if given 3 – 5 days after exposure to chickenpox can prevent or
reduce the severity of illness.

If you have any questions about chickenpox, or its vaccine, please contact your family's physician or the MonroeCounty Health Department, at 734-240-7800. You may also contact the District Health Nurses for the Bedford Public Schools at 734-850-6034. For more information, please read this parent letter from our District Nurses.
