Snow Days Result in Longer Days but NO Makeup Days!
We have a change in our ending times for school for children in Young 5's-l2th grade beginning
April 13, 2015--the first day back from Spring Break. Our district this year meets the minimum requirement for number of contact days with the state of Michigan, but unfortunately due to the inclement weather, we do not meet the minimum requirements for clock hours/minutes of 1,098 hours for a school year.
Therefore, we will be adding seven minutes to school for each school day between April 13 and June 3,
NEW STARTING AND ENDING TIMES THROUGH JUNE 3RD:
Elementary (grades Young 5's - 5th): ............... 8 :20am - 3 :27pm
Junior and Senior High (grades 6-12th):.......... 7:25am - 2:32pm
June 4 will remain a full-day of scbool for the Elementary (with release set at 3:27pm) and a
half-day of school for the Bedford Junior High School and Bedford High School (with release set at 10:55am).
June 5 will remain scheduled half day of school for Young 5's - 12th grade with this day ending at its normally scheduled time (l0:55am for Bedford Junior High School and Bedford High School and 11:50am for the Elementary schools).
If you have any questions regarding this matter, please contact the Office of Instruction and Student ServicesOffice beginning Monday, April 6 at 734-850-6028.
District Earns Accreditation Recommendation!
We are very excited to announce that the AdvancEd External Review Team was very impressed with our district and is recommending to the AdvancED Accreditation Commission that the Bedford Public School System earn the distinction of accreditation by AdvancEd!
This is a district wide distinction and applies to each of our schools: Douglas Road Elementary, Jackman Road Elementary, Monroe Road Elementary, Bedford Junior High School and Bedford High School.
Our Index of Educational Quality Overall Score: 264.63
- More details can be found in this explanation sheet about the Index of Education Quality (IEQ).
We would like to thank our AdvancED visiting team of Dr. Alyce LeBlanc, Jennifer Michos, Sue Muntz, and Cherie Godfrey. This team used a diagnostic process to stimulate and guide continuous improvement with a focus on:
Teaching & Learning Impact: "The Bedford Public School System advocates for the success of each and every student as evidenced by a wide range of educational support and enrichment options and opportunities."
Leadership Capacity: "The Bedford Public School System at every level has a growth mindset that embraces improvement and professional learning."
Resource Utilization: "The Bedford Public School System has come out of a deficit elimination plan two years ahead of schedule."
The review team identified the following Improvement Priorities for Bedford Public Schools:
Develop and implement a guaranteed, standards-based curriculum at all levels that is tightly aligned vertically and horizontally, and establish a consistent protocol to monitor and adjust to meet the needs of learners.
Establish and implement a system of balanced assessment (formative, common/interim, summative) to ensure curriculum being articulated is being met.
Develop and implement embedded processes, procedures and protocols, including training, that lead to the systematic analysis and use of data by professional and support staff to inform decision-making, improvement planning, and modification of the educational program.
Employ a systems approach to planning, including the strategic plan, district improvement plan, school improvement plans, and school level action plans that ensure input opportunities from appropriate stakeholders as measurable benchmark targets, and monitoring protocols.
You can view the entire External Review Exit Report shown to the school board at a Special Meeting on April 1, 2015. AdvancED will be providing us with a formal written report within 30 days. These recommendations will now be used in our District Improvement Plan and District Strategic Plan and allow us to remain focused on improving student achievement!
We also will file our Accreditation Progress Report to show how our district plans on addressing our four Improvement Priorities within the next two years. If we can document that these have been, or are being met, this will improve our Index of Educational Quality scores.
We would like to thank our District School Improvement Team members (Kim Ortiz, Erin Hirsch, Dawn Keiser, Julie Eaton, Kim Eltschlager, Kathryn Effler, Lisa Heartz, Scott Earl, and Amy Driehorst) for their dedication to this very important process! Their efforts were, in turn, supported by numerous others in our district as we went through this accreditation process. We would also like to thank every single person at Bedford Public Schools, for all they do, each and every day, that truly earned us this honor!

Spring Student AssessmentsThis spring, students will begin taking the Michigan Student Test of Educational Progress, or M-STEP, as a replacement for the MEAP assessments that have been used for the past 44 years.M-STEP was developed by Michigan educators and assesses the Michigan's content standards that students are expected to know. All M-STEP assessments will be taken online. These are not timed tests and students may have access to online tools such as a calculator or highlighting tools, for example. Unlike the MEAP version, the M-STEP English Language Arts and Math assessments will include a computer test portion, an in-class activity, and a performance task.
All students in grades 3-8 will be taking Mathematics and the English Language Arts (ELA). ELA will cover Reading, Writing, and Listening. Fourth and 7th graders will also be taking Science. Fifth and 8th graders will also be taking Social Studies. Testing will begin after Spring Break. Schedules will vary from building to building. More specific information on the exact dates and times will be coming from your child's principal.
5th and 8th grade students in our district will take this test beginning April 14, 2015.
4th and 7th grade students will begin testing on April 28th.
3rd and 6th grade beginning May 18th.
High school juniors will also be taking the M-STEP assessments in ELA, Math, Science, and Social Studies which will begin after Spring Break on Thursday, April 16.
The MI-Access is still available for students with disbalilities if their IEP requires an alternative assessment and may include a pencil/paper option.
This website is a good resource for your child: http://www.michigan.gov/mde/0,4615,7-140-22709_70117---,00.html and we encourage you to refer to it.
