BPS Seeks AdvancED Accreditation

Bedford is in the process of updating our accreditation status as a district. We are working with AdvancED. AdvancED performs accreditation evaluations worldwide. For quite some time, our staff has been busy behind the scenes accumulating supporting documentation showing the work we put into providing a quality education to our community. This is followed by an External Review Team Visit to our district on March 30th, 31st and April 1st. This five member team, including regional members as well as national members, will be evaluating Bedford according to AdvancEd Standards.

The External Review Team will present a preliminary report to the Board of Education at a Special Board Meeting on April 1, 2015 at 3:45 pm in the BHS Media Center. This meeting is open to the public. A formal written report will be provided to the district within 30 days.

Spring Student Assessments

This spring, students will begin taking the Michigan Student Test of Educational Progress, or M-STEP, as a replacement for the MEAP assessments that have been used for the past 44 years.M-STEP was developed by Michigan educators and assesses the Michigan's content standards that students are expected to know. All M-STEP assessments will be taken online. These are not timed tests and students may have access to online tools such as a calculator or highlighting tools, for example. Unlike the MEAP version, the M-STEP English Language Arts and Math assessments will include a computer test portion, an in-class activity, and a performance task.

All students in grades 3-8 will be taking Mathematics and the English Language Arts (ELA). ELA will cover Reading, Writing, and Listening. Fourth and 7th graders will also be taking Science. Fifth and 8th graders will also be taking Social Studies. Testing will begin after Spring Break. Schedules will vary from building to building. More specific information on the exact dates and times will be coming from your child's principal.

High school juniors will also be taking the M-STEP assessments in ELA, Math, Science, and Social Studies which will begin after Spring Break.

The MI-Access is still available for students with disbalilities if their IEP requires an alternative assessment and may include a pencil/paper option.

This website is a good resource for your child:,4615,7-140-22709_70117---,00.html and we encourage you to refer to it.

For more information, click here for a letter from Mr. Edward Manuszak, Assistant Superintendent of Instruction and Student Services. You may also contact your child's principal.

An Update to the Snow Day Update

The state gives us 6 days. We had 15 extra hours. We used them all. Plus four extra hours, which, if nothing changes, we will be required to make up as of February 26, 2015. A bill introduced this month by Rep. Phil Potvin, R-Cadillac, proposes increasing the current six-day limit on closings to nine. We would be within that limit as long as Old Man Winter relaxes a bit! Mr. Kleinhans would like to give the weather and the legislature some time to go through their cycles! You will recall some legislative proposals last year that ended up not helping us out and we made up days at the end of the school year to comply with state law. So try to keep your plans flexible, if possible, until we find out what, if anything, the state legislature and the Michigan Department of Education decide upon. It is too soon to speculate or make assumptions! Stay tuned for more details. Will keep you posted as things change and decisions are made. Stay warm!
