Three fires in the last four months have destroyed 3 buildings on the grounds of the Bedford High School campus near the Community Stadium. Each building was a storage area for equipment used by various athletic programs including football, baseball, and our track and field programs. Arson is suspected.
Alumni Association Rallying Support After Fires
While the district does have insurance, depreciation on equipment accumulated and used over a number of years means we would not receive the full replacement value of the destroyed items. We have lost over $25,000 worth of equipment with the damage from the most recent fire still being assessed.
The Bedford Alumni Association is seeking to rally support for the hard working young men and women who bring pride to our athletic programs and who rely on the equipment to train and practice in a meaningful and competitive fashion.
Dustin Cress, President of the Bedford Alumni Association, has stated that the group would like to raise enough money not only to assist in replacing the damaged equipment, but also help the school in installing new security cameras and equipment to prevent such crimes from taking place in the future.
Anyone interested in helping can donate securely through PayPal at www.bedfordalumni.com/donate. Or a check can be mailed to the Bedford Alumni Association at 1623 West Sterns Road, Temperance, MI 48144. The Bedford High School Alumni Association is an approved 501(c)3 charity, meaning donations are tax deductible, and 100% of your contributions will go directly to the Athletic Department.
Anyone with information related to the fires is encouraged to contact the Monroe County Sheriff's Department. They can be reached at (734) 240-7700.
We appreciate the support of our friends, family, and community when times get tough. It helps keep us KICKING! Go Mules!
At the October 18th school board meeting, the board approved a change to the dress code policy in the Bedford Junior High School Handbook. Previously, the handbook included "No leggings or pajama pants."
Dress Code at BPS
The board approved new language about leggings rather than prohibiting the wearing of leggings altogether. The new wording will read, "Leggings and yoga pants may be worn with appropriately modest coverings."
Many people attended the board meeting and spoke about dress code issues in our district. The board would like to thank them for taking the time to mention the variety of concerns that they had during the public commentary period. Most of the people gathered left after that commentary period and did not stay for the board discussion when they reached that item on the agenda. We would like them to know that their concerns were heard and discussed for some time.
Immediately following the wording change approval, the board directed the superintendent to convene a committee to revamp the entire dress code K-12. Input will be gathered from parents and students. A survey form will be available shortly so that opinions from all can be taken into consideration as the dress code is reevaluated. Look for more information about that by the end of the week.
Update: Next Dress Code Committee Meeting date set: December 7, 2016 at 5:30 pm.
Spring 2016 Assessment Results Released
In the second year of the M-STEP online assessments at Bedford, we have exceeded the state averages in 15 of the 16 categories...we were just shy of the state average in 5th grade math.
Last Spring, the juniors took the SAT for the first time. (Previously, the juniors took the ACT test.) Our juniors averaged 1010.4 while the rest of the state was at 1001.
As with any summative standardized test, this is one snapshot of how our students perform. We use data generated by these tests, in conjunction with other student assessment data gathered throughout the year, to look for ways to improve. Bedford's Balanced Assessment Team and school improvement efforts continuously focus on ways to improve the education for each of our students.
